Public Cloud Services
Consumers have access to a host of public cloud services. Many of these services offer free initial storage and the ability to pay for more, should it prove necessary. Google Drive, Dropbox Apple iCloud and others are all some of the most common options as many services (such as Google and Apple) include the cloud storage when creating an account or buying a product.
These cloud services are rather basic, as there are few bonus features. An account holder logs into their account from any Internet based device and can access the information. Initial storage is limited, but for a single person who manages their account it should prove to be a valuable option. They are great tools, but they are vulnerable to hacking and can feel a bit out of control for a priceless family photo and video collection. Doorstep Digital likes for our clients to rely on these clouds + private clouds.
Private Cloud Service
A private cloud storage service can be set up in your home similar to the way it would be set up for a small business. This is where a private cloud is attached to a closed network. A business or home may have a closed network where all computers connect locally. The cloud storage service is connected to this service, so not only is it possible to access saved information while on the network, but users can log in through an Internet connected device (such as a smartphone, tablet or computer) anywhere in the world. This kind of service is helpful when employees or families must travel for work and still have access to priceless photo or videos of their family.
Network Attached Storage (NAS) services such as Synology can be used by the average consumer based on their home setup. It is possible to have a home network through the wireless router and multiple hard drives connected with the router. A private NAS can then be created, allowing an individual consumer to access their private family photo, video, and music collection anywhere in the world.
With a private cloud service at home, families instantly increase their household digital connectivity. This makes sharing information from connected devices (computers, smartphones and tablets) easier than ever before.
Shared Home Networks and Private Cloud Benefits
As referenced earlier, a home network makes it possible to access files the same way a large, private corporation or small business would do. This process also makes sharing photographs, digital videos and documents with family members easier. Without a private cloud service, family members only really have the option of either printing out copies of pictures or uploading the information to a social media account. If the user does not want the files to go public, they can simply save the information to the private cloud storage and family members can log on and view the photographs. It is a much more secure and “in control” way of archiving your priceless family photo and video collection.
